Egg tempera icon. Mather of God in Majesty.
The almond shape that encloses the Virgin represents the communication between two worlds, ie. the material plane and the spiritual, the human and the divine.
The model was the fresco "The Virgin and Child in Majesty, with Archangels and the Magi", ca. 1100 - Attributed to the Master of Pedret.
